The most darling guest house in Clarkdale, Arizona
I arrived at the Blue Heron Guest House for an Arizona Getaway on a cool October evening. The cute little cottage was decorated with pumpkins and spooky ghosts hanging from the tree near the front porch. Inside, a bowl of Halloween chocolates begged me to say Trick or Treat. I’ve brought my 12-year-old son to the USA for a proper Halloween and with only two days until the big night, excitement is mounting.
Although the guest house sleeps 4 (2 in the queen-size bed and 2 on the pull-out futon – though I recommend only 2 people stay at a time), my son opted to stay in the main house*. And I didn’t mind, I loved having this rustic, yet trendy, wee bungalow all to myself for a few nights. *Disclosure: Blue Heron Guest House is owned and operated by our cousins, Ryan and Andrea. The main house is not for rent.
Three nights of bliss at Blue Heron Guest House
I was lucky enough to stay three nights at Blue Heron Guest House, which is the perfect length for a reviving getaway. When I arrived in Arizona, I wasn’t feeling the greatest. I had fallen ill while in Victoria, Canada and was still feeling under the weather so it was great to have my own space to laze about when I needed. Honestly, I could have holed myself up in that little house for the entire three days just watching Netflix (provided) and making tea and coffee (also provided). Actually, I did do a fair bit of that whilst there.
The guesthouse is close to the main house but still quiet and private. It’s essential to have a car as there’s no public transportation and it’s about a 20-minute walk to the nearest cafe, Violette’s Bakery. The cottage has a small fridge, microwave and coffee maker so feel free to bring your own breakfast supplies. There’s also the option to share the back yard, which offers a BBQ and open fireplace, with Ryan and Andrea too. S’mores by the fire are available to guests and I highly recommend taking advantage.
The front porch offers deck chairs and a table, a great spot for morning coffee or a sunset drink. Blue Heron is a cozy, clean and quiet base for a staycation, weekend holiday or even a week-long Arizona getaway. You can make a booking for the Blue Heron here.
An Arizona Getaway is even better with a dog
I cannot write about the Blue Heron Guest House in Clarkdale without raving about Bruce, the family pet. Bruce is an Australian Red Heeler, an iconic Aussie cattle dog, and the most adorable and hospitable dog. Of course, he lives in the main house with Ryan and Andrea but you may see him around the yard. If you do, please know that he doesn’t like cuddles or too much physical attention from strangers.
You see, Bruce endured a terrible tragedy awhile back that has scarred him emotionally. A couple of years ago, he was attacked in a random act of violence by another canine while the family was fishing. Bruce and Ryan were both injured but they live to tell the story and show the battle scars. Bruce is friendly, lovely and gorgeous, and just as welcoming as his humans.
Sorry, The Blue Heron Guest House does not allow guests to bring their pets.
